During National Mentoring Month, we’ve been sharing stories on our Facebook page about how Bigs have helped change Littles’ lives (and how their lives have been changed too.) Here’s an account by Maggie Wheeless, a longtime school counselor at schools in Buncombe County.
Margery “Maggie” Wheeless has supported BBBSWNC through her work in public schools for around 20 years. Three years ago, a friend encouraged her to take the next step and become a Big Sister.
“Volunteering and giving back to my community have always been important to me,” Maggie says. “Even as a young person, I sought opportunities to make a difference. After college, I spent a year as an AmeriCorps volunteer, which reinforced my commitment to service. As a school employee, I get to know students on a certain level, but I felt that being a Big would allow me to build a deeper, long-term, and supportive friendship.”
Maggie and Kayada have been matched for a little over two years, and their time together has been filled with fun and variety. “We usually try something different each time we meet,” Maggie says, “and I love that she’s open to new experiences.”
Building a trusting relationship with a middle schooler takes patience, consistency, and genuine care, Maggie says. “It’s about showing up, listening without judgment, and creating a safe space where she feels valued and supported over time. I’m honored to share this journey with her and her family.”
